  1. Hi, your action research looks very interesting. I am just wondering, what does the Read 180 program consist of? Is it test taking strategies?

    1. Honestly, I am still researching all that the program entails. This is an intervention that we are doing as part of our school improvement plan to get out of the AYP mess. You can see how it's designed here: http://read180.scholastic.com/about/instructional-model.

  2. Are these students involved in any other reading interventions or direct reading instruction? By 6th grade they probably aren't getting guided reading, for example, but how will you know that this program in particular is the cause of a better STAAR score or benchmark score? Is this a computer program, or is it direct instruction from a teacher? Also, have you thought about having their actual reading levels assessed (like Rigby or DRA) and then reassessed MOY and/or EOY? How much of an improvement in test scores would be considered successful? As a first grade teacher, reading is of the utmost importance to me, and I worry when struggling students are put on a computer program (if that's what this is) and taught strategies to improve achievement on tests. I wonder what direct instruction (like I do in first grade reading groups) would do for achievement. Strategies don't help much if the reading level wasn't really increased. I think that a reading level done by a teacher, not a computer program, would add some valuable information to the mix.

    1. Your concerns with computer-based interventions are very valid and I completely agree with using teachers to assess reading levels. The Read 180 program has a computer-based component, but it is facilitated by a highly qualified reading teacher with a combination of whole class, small group, and individual instruction. My campus hasn't met AYP for many years and we are in stage 3 of school improvement. I have planned my research in this fashion because this how TEA has recommended we address this part of our improvement and assist my principal in getting the data he needs in the correct form. I’m a band director so I’m not always in the loop about all of the interventions in place for our students, but from my understanding, unless a student is special ed or 504, there are not any other interventions.

  3. I have heard that term Read 180 and thinking our SPED used it a few years ago, but I can't really recall exactly what it is. I think Catharine made valid points and I was wondering some of the same things she stated. If you would like to add another computer program in addition to what you are doing now, look at I-Station Reading. I went to a training today and was very impressed. Good luck with your plan. I hope your students find success within this program and your project!

  4. This program is being used on my campus and I've heard nothing but good things about it. The secondary specialist has stated that the program can help the students grow tremendously if utilized properly. Going back to your template, it looks great! I like how everything is simple and easy to read. Quick question - are you the Read 180 teacher on your campus? Good luck!

  5. I think this week's assignment addressed one issue of force field technique which could be applied- what to do if program is not working what strategies can be implemented? I know Read 180 is a good program, but there are different ways to implement it in the classroom.

  6. I just have a couple of questions. Does Read 180 teach reading test taking strategies? Will all teachers utilize the program in the same way?

    1. The Read 180 program uses a variety of instructional methods to isolate the problems each student is having and work to rectify them. You can see how it's organized here: http://read180.scholastic.com/about/instructional-model

      Only students who have not ever passed TAKS assessments (or failed to meet the projected STAAR passing rate) are going to be in the Read 180 program. They will still be in the general ed reading class and are being pulled from an elective to be placed in this program. There will only be one teacher using the Read 180 program.

  7. Sounds like a great research project! Are you going to compare last years 6th graders to this years OR last years 5th grade scores to this years 6th graders (following the same kids). I am not really sure which one would be better for your research but I know that the math teachers get upset because some data tracks 6th/6th grade and it is a different group of kids. However, 6th/6th grade would be easier.

  8. I love how your template and information is easy to read. It is always interesting to take a look at how different programs will impact the students and determine if they are truly successful. Your timeline is within the school year, which I feel most of ours will be, but it would be interesting to see the data over a longer time frame. Sometimes it is hard to see a trend of results in such a short period for the true effectiveness of a program. When did the reading program first get implemented? It will be great to see the short term effects of the program on the student and then see if it has longevity. Good luck and I look forward to keeping up with your progress!
